SSH is an open protocol with many implementations. While Mac OS X and Linux come with integrated ssh software, on Windows one of several add-on solutions must be installed. Here is a brief and non-exhaustive list.
PuTTY Suite
- Putty is a very popular ssh suite, providing all functionalities: key management, a whole terminal emulator, and file transfer.
- See also: Wikipedia entry
- Tunnel setup for Carbon
SSH Tectia Client
SSH Communications Security offers a large suite of ssh-related applications. End users typically use the client part.
- Commercial (approx. $200)
- See http://www.ssh.com/downloads/ for evaluation versions.
- A non-commercial solution is no longer maintained. Version 3.2.9 is available for download from numerous places, but is no longer recommended.
SftpDrive
SftpDrive, as the name implies, is not a terminal application but rather one for file transfer.
- Commercial app (approx. $29)
- Direct Explorer integration – maps remote directory to a drive letter.
- Sister product of ExpandDrive for Mac OS X.
Other Programs
- A Comparison of Free SSH and SCP Programs for Windows gives an authoritative overview.
- Another Comparison of SSH clients is available on Wikipedia.
