If you use a Mac, you probably want to have full read and write access to your calendar from iCal, the standard Mac calendar application.
View, add, and delete events from your iPhone
If you have an iPhone, and you want to have full read and write access to your calendar from it, your best bet is to use Option 3 from the MCS IT Wiki page on iPhone configuration.

In my case I have turned off Mail and Contacts synchronization and only use this for Calendar synchronization (because I have all my mail redirected to Google's gmail, and I do all my contact synchronization through Apple's Mobile Me):

Also, I have selected my Zimbra public calendar as the default calendar for events on my iPhone:

How anyone can view the public calendar from their Google Calendar web interface
If you want to let someone view your public calendar from their web-based Google Calendar view, you first need to know the public URL of your public calendar (don't use the version that ends in .html). When they use their web browser to go to http://calendar.google.com, they should look at Other Calendars near the bottom left, select Add, and Add by URL:

Now they should enter the public URL for your public calendar; again, don't add the
.html
on the end (unfortunately the full string doesn't fit in this view, but again it is
http://zimbra.anl.gov/home/johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov/CJpublicANLl
):

They may also want to change the name of the calendar to something better than the default, which they can do in the Settings for their Other Calendars:

Your Zimbra public calendar will now show up as one of their Google calendars. However, be warned! Google seems to only refresh this information once per day, as noted in discussions here and here, so their view of your calendar could be as much as 24 hours out of date in this view.

Information on other mobile device clients

How anyone can view the public calendar from iCal
If you want to let someone view your public calendar from iCal on the Mac, one way to set this up is as follows:
# Tell them to {#How anyone can view the public calendar from their Google Calendar web interface | add your public calendar to their list of Google calendars] as described above.
# In iCal, make sure that the public calendar is checked among their "delegates."

If you want to let someone view your public calendar from their iPhone, they first need to know the public URL of your public calendar. On their iPhone, they should go to Settings, then Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then Add Account...

They then select Other, and Add Subscribed Calendar. They can then add the public URL for your public calendar, such as <ode>http://zimbra.anl.gov/home/johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov/CJpublicANL
(that is, without the
.html
at the end):

By the way, if they want to turn on and off the display of particular calendars on their iPhone, they can go to the Calendar app, select Calendars at the upper left, and select what calendars are shown:

How to make your public Zimbra calendar viewable within a web page
To make your public Zimbra calendar viewable within a web page, just insert into the web page a link to the public URL of your public calendar (and this time you do use the version ending in
.html)
:

In my case I have turned off Mail and Contacts synchronization and only use this for Calendar synchronization (because I have all my mail redirected to Google's gmail, and I do all my contact synchronization through Apple's Mobile Me):

Sharing Your Calendar With Others
Creating a Public Calendar
As a first step to making public sharing possible, you should create a calendar that is
# separate from your default calendar and
# by its name it reminds you that it's a publicly-viewable calendar.

You should choose a name with no spaces in it; in my case I chose a name of "CJpublicANL" for my publicly-viewable Zimbra calendar. To do this, first go to the web page http://zimbra.anl.gov and log in. Pick the Calendar tab at the top, and then create a new calendar by clicking on the calendar add button at the upper left:

When you click on this to create your new calendar, type the name you've chosen (without spaces!) and perhaps color it red to remind yourself that it's a publicly-viewable calendar:

Your new calendar now exists. However, you still need to do two more things in Zimbra:

* Share the calendar with a colleague at Argonne, so that they can view it and add or edit events.
* Share the calendar for viewing (read-only) by anyone.

Sharing your calendar within Argonne
To share the calendar with a colleague at Argonne, so that they can view it and add or edit events, you first need to know that person's Zimbra email address. Let's say that you want to share your calendar with
johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov
. From the Zimbra web page, click the Preferences tab at top right, and then pick Sharing in the Preferences menu at left. At the bottom of the screen, select Calendar as the Folder type, and then click on Share:

You then have to select your public calendar as the one to share, and
click OK at the bottom:

The sharing window will now pop up. Pick Internal users or groups at the top, enter the Email address, select the Role of Manager, and click OK at the bottom:

The person you have added will now get the standard email message informing them of their access to your public calendar. Remember, in this case by selecting Manager for the Role you've given them permission to add and remove events.

Sharing with Everyone
Note: You should first create a calendar for public sharing

To share the public calendar so that anyone can read it, again from the Zimbra calendar web interface click the Preferences tab at top right, pick Sharing in the Preferences menu at left, and at the bottom of the screen select Calendar as the Folder type and click on Share:

Again select your public calendar:

This time for Share with pick Public:

You will see two Universal Record Locators or URLs at the bottom. Unfortunately, the middle of the text is filled in with an ellipsis, but if your Zimbra email username is
johndoe
, you are at the APS at Argonne, and your public calendar name is
CJpublicANL
, the two URLs for your public calendar will read

http://zimbra.anl.gov/home/johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov/CJpublicANL

http://zimbra.anl.gov/home/johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov/CJpublicANL.html

Make note of your public calendar's URL.

Again select your public calendar:

This time for Share with pick Public:

You will see two Universal Record Locators or URLs at the bottom. Unfortunately, the middle of the text is filled in with an ellipsis, but if your Zimbra email username is
johndoe
, you are at the APS at Argonne, and your public calendar name is
CJpublicANL
, the two URLs for your public calendar will read

Again select your public calendar:

This time for Share with pick Public:

You will see two Universal Record Locators or URLs at the bottom. Unfortunately, the middle of the text is filled in with an ellipsis, but if your Zimbra email username is
johndoe
, you are at the APS at Argonne, and your public calendar name is
CJpublicANL
, the two URLs for your public calendar will read

http://zimbra.anl.gov/home/johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov/CJpublicANL

http://zimbra.anl.gov/home/johndoe@zimbra.aps.anl.gov/CJpublicANL.html

* Share the calendar with a colleague at Argonne, so that they can view it and add or edit events.
* Share the calendar for viewing (read-only) by anyone.
