Detailed Steps, Helpful Links, and an Example of an In-Flight Tune

  1. Tune primary beam w/ RAISOR OFF to time-of-flight, check [define this] and record
  2. Insert production target APETURE and focus primary beam on production target with SOLENOID
  3. Turn on RAISOR DIPOLE MAGNETS, set to predefined starting fields [??]
  4. Insert the RAISOR MIDPLANE CUP
    1. Use cups before and after production target
    2. Check for current on MIDPLANE CUP as well
  5. Insert the required production target
  6. Tune degraded beam w/ RAISOR OFF to time-of-flight, check [define this] and record
  7. Set RAISOR MIDPLANE SLITS to XXX (top) and XXX (bottom)
  8. Tune the degraded beam THROUGH RAISOR to RAISOR MIDPLANE CUP
  9. Optimize the degraded beam tune on the MIDPLANE CUP
    1. Clear the RAISOR MIDPLANE SLITS
    2. Periodically carry out slit scans to determine the midplane focus
    3. Looking to obtain a symmetric Gaussian distribution
    4. The FWHM of the peak is dependent upon the beam / target combination, usually want less than 1-3 mm FWHM
  10. Continue degraded beam tune to RAISOR EXIT

Definitions

  • primary beam - the beam species and charge state taken out of the source at the ATLAS energy requested
  • degraded beam - the same beam species as the primary beam but at a different (lower) energy and most likely different (higher) charge state
  • production target - the target put in place before RAISOR, e.g., Be foil or Gas Cell
